The hair winners and losers of the night

The dresses were not the only thing that had people talking at the Brit Awards last night.

Whilst the fashion was nothing standout, the beauty was next to none.

Hairstyles were at the forefront of people's minds, Pixie Lott made a statement with her funky 'do and Rihanna opted for elegance with an updo. Lydia Bright and Holly Willoughby channelled their inner goddess, with styles that rival Marilyn Monroe.

Jason Cocking, director of Lisa Shepherd London and celebrity hairstylist (whose previous clients have included Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Cat Deeley and Zoe Ball, amongst others) gives his verdict on this year’s boldest hairstyles:

Rihanna

“Although this look is unmistakably similar to her look at her award-winning appearance at the Grammy’s, I think she’s staying true to herself. She has a trademark identity, like the screen sirens of the past, and I don’t see this changing much.

Holly Willoughby

“The volume and curl gives her a sixties vibe, whilst her lighter blonde hair has a golden honeycomb tone which suits most skintones – even the English rose - I think helps to give her a young, but slightly more polished finish.

Florence Welch

“I love Florence’s bold red locks and it’s certainly something which is still leading the way in trends – just look at Sheridan Smith’s stunning new do. That said, I think this new dark hue is too pale for her complexion, I’d like to see her go back to more of a warm tone to lighten up her look.

“Style-wise it’s glamour, but in an un-done way, all the shine but combined with volume and a rich texture. I’m seeing this in the salon more and more -gloss and shine all the way!

Caroline Flack

“Caroline Flack never fails to get it right. She’s very much representative of the 90’s revival we’re currently seeing; fun, fashionable and unmistakably English. The colour really works and I love her zig-zag, disheveled parting – gone are the straight partings for the next two seasons!

Alexandra Burke

“Alexandra Burke is a very pretty girl, but for me this a little bit last year. I would have given this a bit more of a colour injection and mess the pony up a little; it ‘s just a touch too neat. To make this more on-trend I would opt for a simple fishtail plait, pulling out a few hairs to give it that effortlessly stylish finish. That said, the high pony is definitely here to stay.

Lana del Rey

“Matching her super-smooth voice, Lana Del Rey looks every bit the award winner with this super-sleek do. Known for her high-glamour locks she’s paired it down for the awards with a more relaxed vintage style – very much a sign of things to come and reaffirming those much lusted-after style credentials.”
